Behavior

Unlike the relatively peaceful vanilla wolves, feral wolves are naturally hostile to players. When attacking, they will quickly run at targets before leaping at them and dealing 2.5 hearts (5 HP) of damage; when pursuing targets, they will emit a constant growling noise.

In addition to indiscriminately targeting players, feral wolves will also occasionally prey on skeletons, sheep, chickens, villagers, rabbits, Illagers, and goats. This behavior is influenced by how hungry they are.

Predator Hunger
Upon spawning, this predatory mob will have an initial hunger defined by the sum of 10 and a random number (from 0-49); every second, this hunger goes up by a single number. In addition to this, it has a hunger threshold of 80; this threshold is vital for its effective hunger, which is 0 when below the threshold and equal to the difference between the hunger and the threshold when above it. If the effective hunger is greater than or equal to 100, the mob will immediately attack a prey animal; otherwise, its chance of predation is determined by the quotient of 1 and the difference between 100 and its effective hunger.

Surprisingly enough, feral wolves can be tamed (despite their name indicating otherwise). If a player is wearing an Ender Dragon Head, they can tame a feral wolf with bones; any player who attempts to tame one without wearing either of these will cause a message saying «You cannot tame feral wolves without proving your prowess. Discover a mighty enemy, defeat it, and wear its head. Feral Wolves only bow to the protector of the forests.» (referring to the now-removed Hirschgeist) to appear. They can also be tamed wearing the Hirschgeist Skull added by the mod Whisperwoods, which the Hirschgeist was moved to.

Once tamed, feral wolves will drop their spooky visage for a more natural-looking one, and will start following the player, even teleporting if they are too far away from their owner. They can be commanded to sit by right-clicking them with an empty hand. As well as this, tamed feral wolves will attack any mob (save for Creepers and Ghasts) their owner attacks; in extension, a tamed feral wolf will come to its owner’s aid if they are under attack.

Feeding a feral wolf any kind of meat will heal it; a feral wolf’s tail rises and lowers depending on how much health it has, and when a tamed feral wolf is low on health (below 33% health), it will start whimpering pitifully.

Feral wolves can be bred with antlers, and are bred in the same manner as other vanilla animals (right-clicking with the breeding item).

It takes 1 day for a pup to reach adulthood.

Animania Extra Animals

Coyotes on a Mesa

Coyotes are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, and will even attempt to prey on players in the night. However, in the day they can be tamed with raw rabbit or chicken. They spawn in deserts, mesas, and plains.

Tarantulas Lurk in the Desert

Tarantulas spawn in deserts and mesas, and are hostile. They may even fire some of their blindness-inducing hairs at enemies

Hirschgeist

Spawn of Soulsand and the remains of the Deer will summon the Hirschgeist from its world to here

Black Bears

Brown or Grizzly Bear

Kermode or Spirit Bear

A rare subspecies of the black bear

Jellyfish

Jellyfish spawn in water and float aimlessly, but don’t touch them! They will inflict poison and blindness!

Goats

Goats spawn in forests, deserts, savannas, and mountainous areas. They can be befriended by giving them any food, and will defend themselves and their “friends” by headbutting enemies. Goats can also be milked, and the milk can be used to make goat cheese.

Lammergeier/Bearded Vulture

Large birds found in deserts and mountains. They eat bone marrow, and will grab skeletons and drop them down to break their bones open. They can be tamed with bones

Reindeer

Reindeer can be found in any cold biome, and can be bred with wheat or carrots. Reindeer can also be ridden!

A Herd of Boars

Boars are vicious piggies found in many biomes, including forests, jungles, and savannas. Some will attack larger creatures on sight, and most will attack smaller creatures like chickens and pheasants. Drop pork meat and sometimes their head.

Squirrels

Squirrels are timid rodents found in forests. If frightened, they will flee and try to scurry up trees. They can be bred with seeds.

Lampreys

Lampreys are parasitic fish. They will cling onto things bigger than them in order to suck their blood. Be careful in water!

Deer

Deer can be spotted in most forest-y biomes. They run from anything but small mobs, and will run from the player, however they can be bred with apples and wheat. Deer drop venison and their head when killed

Foxes

Foxes are friendly canids found in forest biomes. They can be tamed with raw rabbit or chicken. (pre-1.14 builds only)

Songbirds

Songbirds are common sights in forests. They are harmless and will try to fly away from players, but they do enjoy eating seeds.

Badgers

Badgers can be found in forests and taigas, and will prey on smaller animals such as chickens. If attacked, badgers will throw dirt and other such materials at the attacker, on top of using their sharp claws

Songbird in a tree

Deer grazing

Fox prowling the Forest

Lamprey in a lake

Crabs

Crabs can be found on Beaches and in Swamps, and drop Crab Meat and Bonemeal when killed. Crabs also like to party, but they won’t join any ol party

Horseshoe Crabs

These harmless living fossils can be found in beaches and oceans, and drop bonemeal and their meat when killed

Sharks

Sharks are predatory fish found in the oceans. They may attack players who have already been damaged, as they smell the fresh blood, but do not attack healthy players. Other mobs, are not as fortunate…

Wearable Gear

Hirschgeist skull, wolf capes, and bear capes! The capes also have baubles support.

Moose

Moose are large members of the deer family found in taigas and swamps. Moose are a force to be reckoned with, but slaying one nets you a lot of venison and possibly a head.

(Updated) Feral Wolves

Hostile wolves found in forests and taigas. If a player wears the skull of a Hirschgeist, they can tame these beasts with bones. Killing a feral wolf may drop their head, as well as some pelts, which can be made into capes, leather, and wool

Turkeys

Turkeys are semi-neutral, semi-timid birds found in forests and similar. They will attack back, but scatter afterwards. When attacking or breeding, they flare their tail. Killing one may give you a nice feast! Any 2 adults can breed with pumpkin seeds.

Zotzypre

Zotzpyre are large, flightless bats found in caves as well as in jungles at night. They will use their wings to propel themselves at targets in order to latch on and drink their blood!

Behavior

During the day, coyotes will not attack players, aimlessly wandering around and avoiding any natural hazards such as lava instead. However, during the night, coyotes will become hostile to players, and, upon sight, will quickly run at them before leaping at them and dealing 2.5 hearts (5 HP) of damage; when pursuing players, they will emit a constant growling noise.

In addition to attacking players during the night, coyotes will also attack skeletons, sheep, chickens, villagers, rabbits, and Illagers during that time; this behavior is influenced by how hungry they are.

Coyotes can be tamed with raw chicken, raw rabbit, or raw pheasant, but can only be tamed during the day; any player who attempts to tame one during the night will cause a message saying «This coyote is currently hostile. Perhaps it could be tamed outside of its hunting hours?» to appear. Once tamed, coyotes will start following the player, even teleporting if they are too far away from their owner. They can be commanded to sit by right-clicking them with an empty hand. As well as this, tamed coyotes will attack any mob (save for Creepers and Ghasts) their owner attacks; in extension, a tamed coyote will come to its owner’s aid if they are under attack.

Feeding a coyote any kind of meat will heal it; a coyote’s tail rises and lowers depending on how much health it has, and when a tamed coyote is low on health (below 50% health), it will start whimpering pitifully.

Behavior

Butterflies will aimlessly fly around in a similar manner to bats. When they spot a flower nearby, they will fly over to it and quickly pollinate it, emitting pollen particles from their bodies once they are finished. Occasionally, they will perch on the ground or on walls; upon doing so, they will stay still until a player comes by, at which point they will fly away.

Butterflies can be caught by using a glass bottle on them. Bottles with butterflies inside them have a special tooltip that indicates their variant, size, and whether or not they have collected nectar.

If a butterfly is exposed to rain, it will be unable to take to the air, helplessly flapping in place and taking damage every time a certain amount of time passes; if it was flying around before it was exposed to rain, it will slowly float down to the ground. While in the rain, butterflies will attempt to seek out shelter to protect themselves; upon finding a hiding spot, they will immediately perch.
