Reliquary

Overview

The Reliquary of Souls manifests three different Essences over the course of the encounter, each of which applies unique effects that must be handled differently. First, the Essence of Suffering always strikes the nearest player and afflicts the raid with Essence of Suffering. Second, the Essence of Desire afflicts the raid with Essence of Desire. Finally, players must defeat the Essence of Anger which afflicts the raid with Essence of Anger.

Healers

  • Watch your mana during Essence of Suffering.
  • Quickly dispel Soul Drain.
  • Regenerate Mana from the Enslaved Souls during the Intermission stage.

Tanks

  • While the Essence of Desire is active, be careful of Deaden.
  • Using a Taunt effect while the Essence of Anger is active will cause Seethe.
  • Face the Essence of Anger away from allies to avoid damage from Soul Scream.

Phase 1: Essence of Suffering

This phase is characterized by two things — healing is impossible, and aggro can be easily controlled. Beyond that, Soul Drain must be dispelled immediately.

Tank switching

Since no healing is possible, tanks must be rotated. To facilitate this EoS should move as little as possible. The red circle on the ground marks EoS’ melee range. The current tank should stand in the center of EoS, only if a change is due the new tank moves into the current tank, and the current tank takes one step back. Tanks can usually stay for several fixates and should switch only after their health is low (~15%), or if an enrage is due.

High block value is desirable for all players planning to tank in this phase.

Enrage

Best suited for enrage tanking are rogues with Evasion available (incidentally evasion and the enrage have exactly the same duration). With normal DPS, three enrages can be expected, thus three rogues should be pre-designated. They must step in and take a fixate as in the normal tank rotation, and hit evasion as soon as EoS enrages.

The rogue must not use Vanish after the enrage is over, but rather hand over aggro as described above. If the current tank dies or somehow removes himself from the combat (e.g. with a paladin bubble), EoS switches to normal aggro mechanics (which is very bad).

With good dodge/parry gear, one rogue can tank a whole cycle (all non-enraged fixates plus one enrage).

Healing

Normal healing cannot take place during this phase. The only abilities which help are Blessing of Sacrifice, Power Word: Shield and Pain Suppression. Priests should spam PW:S freely, it’s also a good idea to cast it on the enrage tank 15 sec before the enrage, so that the weakened soul debuff has worn off and a second shield can be cast during enrage. The safest method to deal with Soul Drain is to have two priests hit Mass Dispel every time it happens.

Alternate tanking rotation

The whole raid (except the three rogues) stand on the boss. When a player gets fixated, he moves outside the group (but not far, so that the boss doesn’t move), thus another player gets fixated next. When an enrage is near, everyone moves out from under the boss except the current fixated person and a rogue moves in. The raid moves back in when less than five seconds of enrage remain, so that the next fixate after the enrage is taken by somebody else again.

Geography

The Molten Core in the TCG.

The Molten Core consists of rock and lava, with the lava forming rivers, small lakes and «lavafalls». Other features are small volcano-like smoke vents, molten cracks in the walls and roof, occasional dark iron deposits, and the runes of warding. Most locations do not have specific names, causing the majority of the Molten Core to be called simply «The Molten Core».

There are three possible ways to enter Molten Core:

  • By completing   Attunement to the Core and thereafter being ported in by speaking with Lothos Riftwaker, by jumping through the window next to him, or by jumping into the lava next to his location.
  • By entering the portal in Blackrock Depths.
  • Via a warlock’s Ritual of Summoning.

Anniversary edition

For WoW’s 10-year anniversary, a special 40-player Raid Finder version of Molten Core was re-released to players as a Looking For Raid instance, with the encounters tuned and updated numerically, but «99% of nostalgia preserved». Elemental immunities/resistances were one of the only things «nerfed» in the name of playability;Golemagg’s aggro radius was also reduced. According to one developer, watching Blizzard’s internal testers do Core Hound packs was glorious.

The anniversary raid appeared as an option in max-level players’ Group Finder menus for the duration of the anniversary. The description for the raid read «Celebrate World of Warcraft’s Anniversary by running rampant through Ragnaros’s hallowed Core, to his very lair», referencing Ragnaros’s well-known dialogue just before fighting him. Defeating Ragnaros awarded the achievement Boldly, You Sought the Power of Ragnaros, which came with the mount Core Hound Chain. Ragnaros himself also had a 100% chance to drop a helm of the appropriate armor type, each sharing the same fiery model as the original Crown of Destruction item and Circle of Flame. He had a very low chance to drop the companion Hatespark the Tiny and the cosmetic enhancer Illusion: Flames of Ragnaros. Other bosses dropped only gold. All enemies awarded Hydraxian Waterlords reputation just as in the original version.

Preparation

Raid composition:

  • 1 Warrior Tank (additional paladin tank useful in phase 3)
  • 6-7 healers (6 healers is better than 7)
  • 17-18 damage dealers including at least 2 (better 3) Rogues

Running the Gauntlet

In the corridor leading to the boss, mobs are on a 15 sec respawn timer, so the raid has to run through it fast. There is no safe place between the trash mobs and the boss. The raid must stay close together at all times. No totems must be dropped (else they aggro respawns). The raid should stop and AoE after one third of the distance, a second time after two thirds, and the last time on top of the ramp leading down to the boss. When nuking, AoE capable classes should do AoE, and point damage dealers should concentrate on the red ghosts first, these are the most dangerous type. It’s best to continue moving after all red ghosts are dead, and just keep the larger blue and purple ones tanked — these two types don’t deal substantial amounts of damage.

Upon reaching the top of the ramp, it’s safest to wait for one repop of the last group, kill them, and then engage RoS fully rezzed, buffed and coordinated. The boss becomes active 15 seconds after the first person steps on the ramp.

Prerequisites

Some of Ragnaros’ minor minions waiting to welcome you into the Molten Core.

While technically there are no prerequisites to enter Molten Core through its entrance at the bottom of Blackrock Depths, every Core raider will want to complete the Attunement to the Core quest to enable the shortcut at the bottom of Blackrock Mountain. This quest is given at level 55 by Lothos Riftwaker who is located just outside the Grinding Quarry, on the way to Blackrock Depths. Once attuned you can access Molten Core by talking to Lothos again. When dead (as ghost) you also have the possibility to jump into the lava near Lothos. This can also be done by living players if they have a way to slow fall, or by jumping first onto the small ledge in the pillar on the right as you enter the main chamber of Blackrock Mountain, healing, then jumping down, back toward the wall of the lava pit, to cover the remaining distance to the platform below.

Before Ragnaros can be summoned, the raid must defeat Majordomo Executus. Majordomo Executus will only appear if the raid douses the seven runes that are located near certain bosses in the Molten Core.

Each of the bosses in Molten Core has a very specific loot table, which includes the Tier 1 armor pieces as well as a number of other epic-quality items.

As stated, the Molten Core includes several mechanics which forces players to fight the bosses in a specific order. These mechanics are:

  • Tome of Tranquilizing Shot — this tome (now obsolete) was once necessary for defeating Magmadar. As such, Lucifron (who dropped the tome) had to be killed before Magmadar. Part of the reason was also that Lucifron is located before Magmadar.
  • The runes of warding — most bosses in Molten Core guard runes which must be deactivated in order to summon Majordomo Executus. This means that these bosses must be defeated before Executus becomes available.
  • It’s possible to fight Baron Geddon without getting too close to Shazzrah, but it’s tricky to fight Shazzrah without getting too close to Baron Geddon.
  • While it’s possible to jump down to Golemagg the Incinerator’s location from the ridge behind him, the fiery cracks on it and the fall damage will often kill players before they get to defeat him. When walking around, players often defeat Sulfuron Harbinger on the way.
  • Ragnaros is summoned by Majordomo Executus, who will only agree to do so when he is defeated. As such, Majordomo Executus must be defeated before Ragnaros.
  • The trash mobs in Molten Core provide Fiery Cores, Lava Cores, and Core Leather, which can be used with recipes earned at high levels of Thorium Brotherhood reputation to craft epic armor and weapons. It is generally the case that a raid progressing through Molten Core will use these Cores to craft Fire Resistance armor, which will allow the melee DPS of the raid to survive the final encounters with Majordomo Executus and Ragnaros.
  • These factors, in addition to the layout of Molten Core, usually causes players to kill the bosses in this order: Lucifron → Magmadar → Gehennas → Garr → Baron Geddon → Shazzrah → Sulfuron Harbinger → Golemagg the Incinerator → Majordomo Executus → Ragnaros.

Powerful players (level 70-80+) can fight the eight first bosses in any way they prefer. It’s also possible to skip Lucifron.

Patch changes

  • Patch 1.7.0 (13-Sep-2005): Bind on Equip Bracers and Belts in Molten Core now drop more often.
  • Patch 1.6.0 (12-Jul-2005):

    • The loot tables in Molten Core have been revised slightly.
    • Characters that die and release in the Molten Core will now receive a minimap corpse marker and arrow that will lead them to the window next to Lothos Riftwaker in Blackrock Mountain.
  • Patch 1.5.0 (2005-06-07): Additional new raid items have been added to the treasure lists for bosses in Molten Core.
  • Patch 1.4.0 (2005-05-05):

    • Molten Core boss creatures have all received some new items on their loot tables.
    • Most of the non-class set items that dropped from Molten Core have had their effective levels increased, resulting in higher DPS weapons, and/or better stats and effects.
    • The loot tables for some of the Molten Core bosses have been improved so they drop an additional epic item per kill.
    • Prior to this patch, Molten Core boss creatures could drop items from one of two different tiered sets for every character class. The loot tables have been changed so Molten Core bosses will now only drop items from the lower tier class sets. However, some of the items from those sets were not previously dropping in Molten Core. These missing class set items will now drop in Molten Core, allowing players to complete their lower tier class sets.
  • Patch 1.3.0 (07-Mar-2005):

    • Players who have completed the Molten Core discovery quest can now port directly to the zone, bypassing Blackrock Depths.
    • Fixed an issue that was causing the first Firelord to stop moving.
    • Line of Sight checks removed from many creature abilities in Molten Core.
  • Patch 1.2.0 (18-Dec-2004): If you die in Molten Core, you will now be able to retrieve your corpse at the Blackrock Depths instance line.

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • Early archaeology information stated that the Reliquary’s creation was at the behest of an «unknown council» based in Silvermoon. This could refer to a number of things, such as the «council» of sorts that Lor’themar Theron, Halduron Brightwing and Grand Magister Rommath hold within Sunfury Spire — or perhaps even a reborn Convocation of Silvermoon.
  • Due to her title and occupation, Examiner Alerinda is presumably a member of the Reliquary.

Overview

Ragnaros and Executus, with player character shown for scale.

On release, Molten Core and Onyxia’s Lair were the only 40 man instances in the game, thus Ragnaros was the first «game end boss.» With the advent of Blackwing Lair, Ahn’Qiraj, Naxxramas, and the raising of the level cap with the game’s expansions, defeating Ragnaros has long since ceased to be the pinnacle of raiding success. However, prior to the Burning Crusade, slaying him was still considered a very important step in raid progression before engaging in more challenging content. It was the first raid encounter which required a concerted effort in acquiring massive amounts of a particular statistic (in this case, fire resistance). Moreover, the encounter was the first one to demand the extensive use of consumables, at least in the learning process and in the first few kills. As such, it was once a very important stage in the evolution of a raiding guild.

However, as of the Burning Crusade expansion, this is no longer the case, as this instance is largely obsolete with the introduction of Outland green items with superior stats to most of Tier 1 (and the fact that most higher instances are lower than 40 man, making them a much more practical way to go). It is now typically only run for the  Molten Core achievement, or by players seeking to craft Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros or Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.

Notes and trivia

  • Killing NPCs within Molten Core still rewards reputation with the now-removed members of the Hydraxian Waterlords.
  • Prior to patch 3.0.8 the Hydraxian Waterlords offered a , eventually rewarding Aqual Quintessence, which was at one point required to douse the Runes of the Firelord in order to summon Majordomo Executus and consequently, Ragnaros. Presently, defeating bosses will automatically douse their respective runes.
  • There were very few quests that involved the Molten Core. The only significant quest chain was the chain, which was started by a visit to Duke Hydraxis off the coast of Azshara. Completing this quest chain required killing one of each of the trash mobs in the Core, and then defeating the four Flamewaker bosses in Molten Core (Lucifron, Gehennas, Shazzrah, and Sulfuron Harbinger). In addition, all the trash mobs and bosses in Molten Core provided Hydraxian Waterlord reputation. The final reward options for this quest chain were Tidal Loop or Ocean’s Breeze, both rare rings with high Fire Resistance.
  • As of patch 4.3.0 Molten Core can be accessed without being in a raid group by speaking with Lothos Riftwaker.

A card back themed after the Molten Core in Hearthstone.

  • Molten Core was originally planned as a single room in Blackrock Depths containing the boss fight with Ragnaros, before being expanded into an entire separate instance.

The geometry for the two dungeons meshes perfectly.

  • Molten Core was nearly cut from World of Warcraft. To ensure it would be in the game at release, developers finished working on the dungeon in a single week. Jeff Kaplan did all of the spawning and creature placement, while Scott Mercer designed all of the boss fights, Bob Fitch worked up loot for the dungeon, and Pat Nagle created the Hydraxis quest line. Alex Afrasiabi was responsible for the attunement quest which would be patched in later.
  • The very first legendary item that dropped in World of Warcraft, the Talisman of Binding Shard, was immediately hotfixed out of the game.
  • In Hearthstone, the Molten Core card back was rewarded for pre-ordering the Blackrock Mountain adventure. The flavor text reads: «The Molten Core of Azeroth and not a chocolate lava cake, unfortunately.»

Features:

Blocks and Items:

  • Coin of Fortune – magnet that teleports items and experience to player
  • Hunter’s Handgun – handgun that can be loaded with a variety of different shots (like shots that seek their target, or make creepers explode, …)
  • Infernal Chalice – a portable lava storage, but also an item that prevents the player from being hurt in lava (in exchange for some hunger)
  • Interdiction Torch – torch that pushes mobs in its range away
  • Lilypad of Fertility – lilypad that makes nearby crops grow faster and that can be put side by side with other lilypads for even greated effect
  • Nian Zhus – item that makes mobs ignore player (each of them specific to a mob type – creeper Nian Zhu, zombie Nian Zhu, …)
  • Sojourner’s Staff – staff that can hold multiple stacks of torches and then place these in world, close to the player as usual or even at great distance for additional cost
  • Void Tear – item that can hold a huge number of stacks of a specific item (no more cobble clutter)Witherless Rose – flower that prevents player who has it in their inventory from being withered

Pedestal:

Pedestal can be used as a fancy display of items, but at the same time it is functional as well when you put some specific items in

  • Picks up items and xp orbs – coin of fortune
  • Works as a tank for xp – hero’s medallion (charges the medallion with the xp)
  • Attacks mobs – sword (many different kinds work including Tinker’s)
  • Gets milk from cows or picks up liquid from the world around – bucket
  • Shears sheep or shearable blocks – shears
  • Buffs players within range with localized creative flight – Rending Gale in flight mode
  • Pushes/pulls mobs in range – Rending Gale in appropriate mode
  • Works as an automated farm – Harvest Rod

Tome of Alkahestry:

Tome of Alkahestry allows duplicating some items for a cost of its charge. By default there are not that many but include even some pretty expensive stuff like diamond or nether star (of course for a cost that’s appropriate to those).

Potion system:

Reliquary includes custom potion system that allows creating a lot of different kinds of potions. It uses some very basic ingredients like potatos up to very expensive ones like nether stars and the resulting potions have appropriately strong effect(s). Wiki has way more information on how exactly this works and all of the different ingredients and effects.

Expansion Relevance

With the arrival of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade the popularity of the Molten Core took a turn for the worse, with items available in the expansion superior in quality to that of the Molten Core or any of the other forty player instances at the time. However, frustration with the hours-long instance duration were alleviated, allowing players to power through the Molten Core in record time — trivializing content. New abilities and better gear reduced the numbers of players needed to complete Molten Core from 40 to below 10.

In Wrath Of the Lich King, it is possible for some classes to solo Molten Core. The classes doing this are usually Paladins and Death Knights, but Hunters, Shamans, Warlocks and Warriors have also managed to single-handedly defeat bosses.

This mod received one of the Cacowards on Doomworld!

Antaresian Reliquary is an nine-level PWAD for Doom II requiring a Boom-compatible source port, created by Seongbae Park (antares031). The WAD is a compilation of maps the author designed for various community projects across four years up to 2020, with the addition of minor tweaks to all maps and two new levels to prevent entry to regular IWAD levels.

Similar to Struggle — Antaresian Legacy, the WAD features new weapons and monsters replacement via DeHackEd. It also has some enemies from Struggle. The first release candidate of the WAD came out on May 17, 2020 and uploaded to /idgames archive on June 6, 2020. It received a Cacoward that same year. The made for the WAD was released separately on May 23, 2020.
