Затем была повесть «Бегущий человек» (Running Man, 1982) Стивена Кинга о подобном же реалити-шоу в дистопической Америке, и её экранизация (1987) со Шварценеггером. Уже затем последовали многочисленные подражания с самыми разными (и нередко слабыми) обоснованиями, для чего, собственно, эти игры проводятся. А вот вариант игр, в котором друг друга убивают сами участники, встречается заметно реже. Можно отметить рассказ Шекли «Седьмая жертва» (Seventh Victim, 1953), также вдохновлённый «Самой опасной игрой», и его многочисленные продолжения. Но ближе всего к «Голодным играм», конечно, японский роман «Королевская битва» (Battle Royale, 1999) и его знаменитая экранизация (2000). Многие даже обвиняли Коллинз в прямом передирании сюжетных элементов «Королевской битвы»; сама Коллинз, впрочем, утверждает, что узнала о «Королевской битве», только когда первая книга «Голодных игр» уже была отправлена в редакцию.

Серия «Голодные игры» — молодёжная антиутопия, действие происходит в постапокалиптической Северной Америке будущего, которое не прекрасно. Собственно Голодные игры — принудительные состязания подростков, выбранных из каждого дистрикта (всего их 12; аналоги канувших в Лету соединённых штатов). Состязания смертельные: победитель должен быть один, и это последний выживший. В отличие от неизбежно приходящей на ум «Королевской битвы», фильма-предшественника «Игр» на этом поле, здесь битва за жизнь происходит каждый год в новой локации: технологии продвинутой столицы (для развлечения которой и устраивается шоу) позволяют приспособить под арену любую площадку с любыми же смертельными сюрпризами для героев.

Главная героиня, шестнадцатилетняя Китнисс Эвердин (Katniss Everdeen) — одна из отобранных в очередной тур Игр детей и подростков. Точнее, она добровольно вызвалась заместить младшую сестру, на которую пал жребий — правила Игр это допускают. Китнисс с детства умеет обращаться с оружием: владеет луком и метко стреляет. Но даже лук — не самая верная помощь в таких обстоятельствах, где за жизнь будут сражаться 24 подростка с разнообразными навыками (в том числе дети из первых дистриктов, которые готовились к Играм с детства), зато одинаковым желанием победить. Кроме того, бороться придётся не только друг против друга, но и с враждебной средой: арена каждый раз предлагает новые ловушки и испытания для участников; в этот раз Китнисс и прочие оказываются в лесу.

Mentoring

Each living victor from each district is given the task of mentoring the next tributes for the Games. If there is only one living victor, he/she will be the mentor for both tributes (e.g. Haymitch Abernathy mentors both Katniss and Peeta for the 74th and 75th Hunger Games). Any living victor, mentor or not, is required to visit the Capitol to watch the Games, visit the residents, and make Capitol TV cameos, but the mentors come alongside their respective District tributes and to watch the Games live. Mentors are very important as they give advice to their tributes, assist in the forming of alliances, politic for their tributes, secure sponsors, and control the sending of any gifts into the arena. A good clear minded mentor is imperative to the success of their tributes with very few exceptions.

Family

Rue was the eldest of six children. She had five younger siblings, all living in poverty in District 11.

She usually gave her food rations to her younger siblings, and foraged in the fields to provide more food for them. District 11 has very strict laws and Rue could be punished for helping her family in this way. On the Victory Tour (in Catching Fire), Katniss sees Rue’s family and her siblings look just like Rue. Her parents were also seen weeping. A man in the back whistles her four note tune, and started a small uprising. The man was shot shortly after. After Katniss sees the man get shot, she hears two more shots, which could possibly mean someone in the family was killed or wounded. At the Quarter Quell, Seeder assures Katniss that Rue’s family is safe.

Rue asks Katniss to sing to her before she dies.

Rue and Katniss had a loving relationship. Katniss formed an alliance with her and took care of her as well. She was deeply cared for by Katniss. Rue told her everything about her, like her favorite thing in the world is music. Katniss felt empathy and pity for her. Katniss demonstrated her love for Rue by crying and mourning her death and covering her body in flowers at the time of her death to show that she was ‘more than just a piece in their games’ .

Katniss trusts Rue because of her similarities to Prim and her gentle demeanor. Katniss also felt pity and empathy for Rue, being forced into the arena at such a young age. She also realized she could trust Rue because she watched over her while she was asleep from the Tracker Jacker venom. One of the reasons Rue said she trusted Katniss, was because of her mockingjay pin.

Rue and her bonded the night Katniss awakened from her tracker jacker injuries. Rue received a groosling leg from Katniss, after she refused the first few times. Katniss and Rue tell each other about their life and district. Rue told her about the Career’s camp and this helps her with her plan.

Rue trusted Katniss when she saw that Katniss had on a mockingjay pin. She then proceeded to help her with a plan to destroy the career alliance. But soon after the second fire was lit, Rue stumbled into a trap set up by Marvel, who stabbed her through the abdomen with his spear while Katniss ran to save her. After dispatching Marvel, Rue begged Katniss win and to sing to her as she died. As an act of defiance and a way to honor Rue’s death, Katniss covers Rue’s corpse with brightly colored flowers and gives her District 12’s farewell gesture, of the three middle fingers pressed to the lips and held up.

Thresh

Thresh liked Rue and took pity on her since she was so young and nice and felt she did not deserve to be forced into the games. They seemed to have a fairly close friendship, as Thresh was infuriated and saddened by her death. During training in the film when Rue stole Cato’s knife (which caused him to attack another tribute), Thresh looked up and smiled at Rue knowing it was her. During the feast, Thresh overheard Clove taunting Katniss about Rue and taking credit for her death, and was enraged by this, Thresh pushed Clove off Katniss and held her above the ground by her throat, yelling accusations at her. Terrified, Clove insisted she didn’t kill Rue (this is true, as it was Marvel who killed her), but Thresh didn’t believe her, and crushed her skull with a large rock (although in the film he bangs Clove against the Cornucopia until her neck breaks), avenging Rue’s death. Due to Katniss’ alliance with Rue, Thresh spared her life, suggesting that he cared for her.

Skills

Gale is an expert at snares and strategy. He has known about snares since the first time he went into the woods. He has been able to catch many animals in his snares, which has been helpful for him and his family. Gale taught Katniss about basic snares, which came in handy during the Hunger Games. Later, he is able to transfer his skill in snares into a skill in designing military weapons and tactics.

Gale is also able to use a bow and arrow, though he is not as accurate or fast as Katniss. He is able to shoot from a certain distance and it takes him a little longer to shoot, but he is proficient enough to hunt and defend himself. He is able to kill animals with his skill.

In Mockingjay, Gale uses a Crossbow in the place of a normal Bow. The Crossbow looks very futuristic and is probably designed by Beetee, like Katniss’ Bow. It’s likely that Gales’ Crossbow uses three different kinds of arrows, just like the Bow of Katniss, but only one kind of arrow is seen in Mockingjay Part 1: The Explosive Arrows.

As tributes battle in the arena, quite often they can become helpless (ex. Peeta Mellark with blood poisoning, Katniss’ leg burn, etc.). This is simply because of the Cornucopia bloodbath, since the tributes are fighting over the items they need to win the Hunger Games. Many of the tributes are left with limited or no items they wanted from the Cornucopia. Wealthy viewers or groups of people can pool their funds and send items into the arena should a tribute need something, such as food, shelter, weapons, or medicine. In the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss received burn medicine and food — most notably a loaf of bread from District 11 that she assumes was intended for Rue before her death. Katniss is extremely touched by this unheard of gesture as never before has a tribute received a gift from another district. Most items are very limited and small but during the 65th Hunger Games, Finnick Odair received what as recalled to Katniss one of the most expensive sponsorship gifts she had ever seen, a trident.

Feasts

If the Gamemakers feel that there has not been enough bloodshed recently, they will invite all of the tributes to the Cornucopia for a feast. Normally this feast features something desirable to the tributes, like food, armor, medicine, etc., though Katniss states in the cave that sometimes there is only a loaf of stale bread to fight over, so they will be more likely to go. Some still choose not to because these feasts usually result in a bloodbath. Attendance is not mandatory, though the Gamemakers may try to tempt the tributes with something vital to their survival.

Creation

The Hunger Games were the creation of Casca Highbottom, but also indirectly by Crassus Snow and Dr. Volumnia Gaul. During Highbottom and Snow’s final days at the University, she served as a professor there and assigned her class a final project: to create a punishment for one’s enemies so extreme that they would never be allowed forget how they had wronged them.

Being best friends, Highbottom and Snow paired together for the project. Highbottom, having a mind for puzzles, began brainstorming the Hunger Games, something which Snow assured him was just a private joke between the two of them. Highbottom, however, was drunk and Snow continued to ply him with alcohol, playing on his vanity as he fleshed out the project. Snow then turned the project in to Dr. Gaul while Highbottom was sleeping off the alcohol, leaving Highbottom to awake horrified at what had happened and meaning to rip it to shreds.
Gaul held on to the project and then, following the end of the war, pulled out the proposal and introduced Highbottom as the architect of the Games. Highbottom thought it would die out quickly, being so ghastly, but Dr. Gaul took it and ran.

Originally, the Hunger Games were primitive, and quite flawed. The tributes arrived to the Capitol in cattle cars, unlike in later installments where tributes were pampered. Upon arrival to the Capitol, tributes were held in old stables, until the 10th Games where they were kept in the Capitol Zoo. Here, they were underfed and often mistreated by Peacekeepers. In the 10th Hunger Games, this led to several tributes dying before the Games had begun.
The first ten installments of the Games were held in the Capitol Arena, an old stadium converted to a fighting arena. Basic weapons were provided, however, food and other supplies were not. Tributes were left in the arena to kill one another, until a lone Victor remained. However, unlike later Games, the winners of the first ten games were not showered in riches and given a home in the Victors’ Village. They were simply returned to their home District and back to the life they formerly lived.

Just like Katniss and most people from the Seam, Gale shares Katniss’ dark hair, olive skin, and grey eyes and is said to be over six feet tall by Katniss because when they met in the woods when he was only 14, she stated he was already almost that height. They look very similar due to their common heritage in the Seam, so alike that people believe them to be cousins in Catching Fire. In Catching Fire, it is explained in further detail that, when the Capitol sent out interviewers to talk to Katniss’ friends and family, everyone directed them to Gale. The interviewers found Gale «too handsome and too male» and thought he might jeopardize Katniss and Peeta’s on-screen romance, and «so some genius made him Katniss’ cousin.»

Muscular and good-looking, girls flock to him — Katniss herself says that Gale would have no trouble finding a wife because he’s handsome and strong. She describes Gale as a boy who could have any girl he wanted, because of the way girls whisper about him. Johanna called him «gorgeous» and Plutarch says that Gale is one of very few people with «camera-ready» faces. His good looks are mentioned throughout the series. She also describes him as smelling like apples, sometimes alder smoke and his skin smells like oranges. He is often seen carrying a militarized bow throughout Mockingjay.

Gale enjoys a good laugh when he is with his best friend, Katniss. He can be easy to anger, and often it is Katniss who keeps it under control. He became angry when Madge Undersee said she wanted to look her best if she gets reaped. He became angry because she is more wealthy than most people in District 12 and doesn’t have to face what he and everyone else must.

Gale hated the Capitol more than most people, even in the worst districts. During his time in District 12, he frequently complained about the unjust political situation in Panem and the tyranny of the Capitol, in contrast to Katniss, who was taught by her mother to hold her tongue. Throughout the books, Gale mentions several times that he feels that a rebellion would be better than just doing what the Capitol wanted.

Unlike Katniss, Gale believed in the idea of victory at any cost. He clashed with her over the way the rebellion should be fought. Where she wanted to save as many lives as possible at the risk of defeat, he wanted them to sacrifice a few lives so that they can insure victory. Katniss tries to think in short-term, while Gale thinks in long-term, about how best to preserve life in Panem. This ruthlessness, combined with his hatred for the Capitol causes him to become a leading figure in the rebellion and to come up with new combat tactics while in District 13. Unfortunately, it is also this personality that eventually costs him his relationship with Katniss.

Gale often thinks in black and white terms, meaning something is either wrong or right and rarely does he see a grey area. He is angered that Katniss worries for her prep team when they are held captive as they are from the Capitol, and so are the ‘enemy’ even though they are relatively innocent.

Gale also had a very idealistic personality. When he believed in something that was being challenged he wouldn’t hesitate to fight for it. It is later said by Katniss that Gale’s fire, his passion, and personality, was very similar to her own; however, hers was always more controlled. He often accompanied Katniss when she did appearances as the Mockingjay, fighting when they came under attack. He also is the first to volunteer for the mission to save Peeta, though whether this is for Katniss or himself is not known.

Personality

Mags was noted by Haymitch to be a wonderful lady and showed herself to be kind, friendly, selfless, and very brave, as well as pragmatic. She volunteered to save Annie, clearly knowing she was not going to survive, and willingly walked to her death to allow Finnick, Katniss, and Peeta to escape the poison fog in the arena without being burdened by her, sacrificing herself without hesitation to protect them so that they would survive (and go on to help the rebellion).

She clearly loved Finnick and Annie, as it was noted she basically raised Finnick, having mentored him and likely Annie as well. She made easy friends with Katniss, who admired the old woman for her bravery and selflessness.

Quarter Quell

Every twenty-five years, the president of Panem selects a card from a box made during the original establishment of the Hunger Games that makes a change in the rules of the reapings. For the first Quarter Quell, or the 25th Hunger Games, each district had to choose the children who went into the arena. For the second Quarter Quell, or the 50th Hunger Games, twice as many tributes had to be reaped to go into the arena (It can be assumed that four children were reaped from each district that year; Two boys and two girls). That was the year Haymitch Abernathy won. For the third Quarter Quell, or the 75th Hunger Games, the tributes were reaped from the pool of existing victors. Katniss Everdeen was despaired when she heard this because her status as the only living female victor from District 12 assured her return to the arena.

Arena

The arena for the 74th Hunger Games was a large, flat area with hard packed dirt that had the Cornucopia in the center of it. Like always, the 24 tributes were set up in a ring around the Cornucopia, which was filled with weapons, food and camp supplies as well as some types of medicine.

The arena contained forests, streams, meadows, pools, a wheat field, caves, and a lake. It was enormous, and it would probably haven taken a tribute several days to walk from one end of the arena to the other. In addition, there were some Capitol-made creatures, including tracker jackers and the wolf-like creatures. The forest was rigged with several Gamemaker-made traps, including a device that sent fireballs at the tributes and places where the mutts could come in and out of the arena. Around the arena is a fence of some sort of electric field (as learned in the second book).
