Reception[]

Starship Troopers: Invasion received mostly good receptions.

Screenrush the website gives the film an average score of 3.3 on a scale of 55 and the Internet Movie Database website an average score of 5.8 on 103.

In 2012, critic Strange-Movies is that the film «is confined mainly to accumulate sequences corridors» and that «all dark even in some form of unintentional comedy.» He noted that in against «this fourth installment proves artistically nice».

Critic Total signal-manga «masterful work on metal textures» as well as human skin textures that are «bluffing enough.» It assigns a «special mention for the great band Boom Boom Satellites, signing a music explosive end».

SlashersHouse critic notes that the film is «very gory» and contains «a lot of nudity.» He noted that this film respects the book «Heinlein while making constant eye winks Verhoeven.» For him, «the director Shinji Aramaki, shows his respect for the works of previous authors, and does it well, because the scenario Flint Dille is itself predictable and not very original.» He concluded by saying that the film «is what the long-awaited, namely a product rich in action, visually impressive and not taking his audience for fools».

Geoffrey Claustriaux, columnist Horror net. • The Federation symbol is commonly mistaken as having being taken from Nazi Germany of the 20th century. Many of its symbols, such as the eagles on the Federal Armed Services uniforms, are actually based off of those used in 20th century American culture and military institutions. In any case, Paul Verhoeven admitted using the Nazi Orpo flag as an inspiration for the Ferderation flag design.
• The Federation’s flag likely drew some inspiration from the flags of the Russian Coast Guard, Imperial Russian Regiments, Imperial German regiments, and the Confederate States of America.

Tactics:[]

During the Klendathu Invasion, the Mobile Infantry employs questionable tactics — if you would even call it that — when storming the Arachnid home-world. Pouring out of their dropships, the troopers formed loose mobs, barely establishing any defensive lines or even flanks. This leads to an easy breakdown of communication and contributed to the extreme losses the Federation suffered in combat. While confronting the Arachnids, several troopers simply «sprayed and prayed», firing their Morita rifles with reckless abandon without inflicting damage on the Arachnids. The Federation treats its soldiers as expendable storm-troopers, seeing that on FedNet they are shown dying. However, this could be propaganda to get people to think they are making a heroic sacrifice.

If an unfortunate situation arises where death to a Bug is inevitable, they are also instructed and/or encouraged to kill a fellow soldier to spare them the horrific death awaiting them.

By the Second Bug War Mobile Infantry tactics were greatly improved. On Roku San, they used «file and rank» tactics; one line of troopers would fire while the line behind them would reload. However, this was only supported because they were fighting in the narrow corridors of the Roku San garrison base, forcing the Arachnids into a single file row that they were able to pick off easily.

Starship Troopers film universe[]

The Arachnids were originally believed to be mindless creatures. When Johnny Rico and Carmen Ibanez dissect Arkellian sand beetles, the biology teacher states that the Arachnids have millions of years of evolution behind them and are, in the case of survival capability, the perfect species. They have the ability to colonize planets «by hurling their spore into space» and possess a social structure which fits their mental capabilities.

As the Arachnid War progressed, it became clear that they have a caste system, with each subspecies filling a specific role. Brain Bugs and God Bug have extreme psychic abilities that can be used to control all bugs in the colony.

Most types of the Bugs are less intelligent, except for the Brain Bug, Control Bug, God Bug, and the Queen.

History

As the United Citizen Federation expanded its territory across the Galaxy, it came into contact with the Arachnid Species covering an area of it. The Federation initially considered the Arachnids to be a less advanced civilization. However, to avoid conflict, the region of space the Arachnids had colonized was Quarantined to prevent any humans settling within it. Despite this, unofficial colonies were created on Arachnid planets, often ending in the Arachnid attacks of these poorly defended colonies leading to massacres, such as at Port Joe Smith.

When a meteor left the Arachnid Quarantine Zone and destroyed Buenos Aires, the Federation claimed the Arachnids to be responsible and waged the first Bug War, followed by the Second Bug War.

Overview[]

This massive creature is deeply rooted into the planet it is deployed upon and possesses numerous appendages beneath the planet’s surface, which it uses to capture and kill prey. The fissures it creates are capable of engulfing beings anywhere on the planet, and the bug attacks prey unfortunate enough to fall into them. Behemecoatyl is capable of speaking through other organisms, using their corpses as gruesome puppets.

The God Bug is capable of extending its head from the ground and appears to share many qualities with the Brain Bug. Its large mouth contains numerous tentacles, which allows it to absorb the memories of other organisms — namely humans.
It’s not known whether there is only a single God Bug or multiple ones.

Notes and Trivia[]

• The Trooper’s combat uniforms (shown in the movie poster above) were later reused on the Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy (wikia site) series for military personnel aboard the colony ship Terra Venture. The uniforms were also repainted and reused in episodes of the TV series Firefly as Alliance soldiers’ uniforms. The helmets were repainted again and used by the SWAT team at the end of the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes. The uniforms, along with footage from numerous sci-fi films including Starship Troopers itself, were used in the sci-fi movie Impostor, starring Gary Sinise, and the live action Gundam film G-Saviour.
• Much of the non-combat military dress seen in the film appears to be adapted from the designs of World War II German Army uniforms and East German uniforms, most prominently amongst the fleet personnel (like Ibanez) and the intelligence officers (like Carl). The use of the same grey colour scheme, seen in almost all the uniforms, is also prominent.
• The Futurama episode «War Is the H-Word» has many references to the film.
• Several cameos in the film include producer Jon Davison as the angry Buenos Aires resident who says to the FedNet camera, «The only good Bug is a dead Bug!», and screenwriter Edward Neumeier as the quickly captured, convicted, and condemned murderer in another FedNet clip. Former U.S. Marine Dale Dye, whose company Warriors, Inc. provided technical military advice on the film, appeared as a high-ranking officer following the capture of the Brain Bug («What’s it thinking, Colonel?»).
• Director Paul Verhoeven, producer Jon Davison, writer Edward Neumeier, creature effects designers Phil Tippett and Craig Hayes, and composer Basil Poledouris were all involved with the original RoboCop movie. Actor Michael Ironside was also considered for the role of Murphy/RoboCop. Ironside did appear in Verhoeven’s Total Recall.
• On the TV series Stargate SG-1, in the 9th season episode «The Scourge», the team decides to watch Starship Troopers for movie night after barely escaping a massive carnivorous alien bug infestation on another planet.
• The cast agreed to do the naked shower scene only if the director agreed to direct the scene naked. Verhoeven directed the scene with no clothes on.
• The short-lived Australian political party, One Nation, mimicked the use of the ‘Do you want to know more?’ advertisements from the film in a 1998 campaign at recruiting youth to the party, presumably unaware of the satirical nature of those ads — especially given the party had a nationalistic far right ideology.
• During the newsbreak which focused on the destruction of Port Joe Smith, it showed a spire with the statue of the Angel Moroni on its top. According to religious custom with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the statue of Moroni is only used on the top of dedicated temples and is not found on any other structure regardless of its purpose.[citation needed]
• The Seattle indie rock band Minus The Bear used quotes from the film as song titles in their album Highly Refined Pirates, including «You kill bugs good, man», «Damn bugs whacked him, Johnny» and «You’re some sort of big, fat, smart-bug, aren’t you?»
• Composer Basil Poledouris’ daughter, Zoe, makes a cameo in the prom dance scene. She is on stage, and sings one original song («Into it») and a cover of David Bowie’s «I Have not been to Oxford Town» from the 1997 album «Outside.» Minor lyrical changes have been made, and the song was renamed «I Have not been to Paradise.»
• In the 2011 first-person shooter video game Duke Nukem Forever, when Duke is fighting against the Aliens, he says: «I’m from Las Vegas, and I say kill ’em all!»

Собственно, как видно из интервью Верхувена — как после выхода фильма, так и сейчас, — правы именно критики. Он специально снял фильм, который идеально выглядел в рамках той вселенной, что описана в фильме. Если бы его показали в том мире, он бы прошёл на ура, получил бы премии и награды. Классическая история про школьных друзей, которые решили дать отпор врагу и даже частично переломили ход войны. Вот только его показали не в том мире, а в нашем. И в нашем мире уже куда лучше видны пробелы в логике пропаганды того мира.

Halo 3: ODST

Необычный вариант десанта представила нам игра Halo 3, а точнее ее самостоятельное дополнение Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. Здесь вы исполните роль орбитального десантника, причем не суперсолдата, а обычного человека. Геймплей не сильно отличается от оригинала – бегаем, воюем, изучаем локации и наслаждаемся отличной историей, которая заполняет пробел между второй и третьей частями.

Specifications[]

The Morita rifle has a «Bullpup» configuration in which the action and magazine are located behind the trigger, increasing barrel length and permitting a shorter weapon, saving weight and increasing maneuverability. The rifle uses 7.62x51mm ammunition (.308 caliber), which explains the rifles’ size, range and power. Theoretically, the rounds may be made from more advanced materials such as carbide or composites. The magazines have a 160 round capacity and the weapon itself can be set to semi- or fully automatic fire. The standard add-on is the 8 gauge 3.5″ 16 round semi-automatic shotgun.  (In the first  film there is a brief mention that the Italian arms dealer «Beretta» makes these rifles.)

Starship Troopers Evolution[]

The game is currently undergoing a renewal. An updated rule system and new miniatures was scheduled to be released in August 2007, but no release has been made to date. At a recent event, some of the new rules were showcased. They included some modified statistics for certain models, limiting models to a single reaction, and two rules known as «suppression» (assumed to simulate suppressive fire pinning troops) and «shattering» (a modification of the current mission objective format). The new miniatures will be made of «wargaming» quality plastic and be pre-painted, as opposed to the current metal unpainted figures. The initial box sets will be:

Игровая механика «Звездного десанта», в принципе, традиционна для варгеймов. Передвижение отрядами по делениям линейки, броски на попадание и дисциплину, модификаторы в зависимости от действий и местонахождения миниатюр — все это знакомо любому настольному полководцу. Изюминка игры — приказы, которые надо записывать для каждого отряда на особых карточках. В начале хода игрок решает, что будут делать его подразделения: двигаться, атаковать или обороняться. Вместе с этим он распределяет между отрядами очки инициативы (их число зависит от размера армии). Затем все карточки вскрываются, и солдаты выполняют приказы в порядке инициативы. Такая система требует от игроков стратегического мышления и привносит в игру дополнительный элемент неожиданности.

Бойцы людей и форсеров очень разные по своим боевым характеристикам, однако разработчикам удалось добиться хорошего баланса. Сейчас, когда фактически вышло только два комплекта миниатюр, большинство сражений сводится к перестрелке, однако появление тяжеловооруженных солдат и военной техники наверняка сделает популярным и ближний бой. Правила рекомендуют ограничивать игру пятью ходами и после этого подсчитывать соотношение убитых с обеих сторон, чтобы определить победителя. Однако ничто не мешает установить иные условия победы: например, сценарий, входящий в набор «Встречный бой», предусматривает полное уничтожение противника.

К качеству изготовления миниатюр серьезных претензий нет: как и ранние наборы «Кольца Власти», они сделаны мастерски. Соблюдены пропорции, насколько это возможно в масштабе 1:48, детализация на уровне. Разнообразие деталей позволяет собрать весьма непохожих друг на друга и по-разному экипированных солдат. Не забыты и декоративные элементы.

Starship Troopers

Старенький шутер от компании Strangelight. Вышел он в 2006 году и по тем меркам выглядел вполне неплохо. Игра посвящена, как вы уже поняли, sci-fi вселенной Роберта Хайнлайна. Отважные бойцы Звёздного десанта защищают Земную Федерацию и противостоят ордам Псевдоарахнидов, рассчитывающих завоевать галактику.

На самом деле игра довольно простая. Выполняй указания командиров, защищай товарищей и бей из всего, что имеешь, по гигантским полчищам насекомых. Банальный отстрел жучьей армии, хотя и не без сюжета. К большому сожалению, шутер так и не стал популярным. Хоть и напрасно, ведь это, по сути, единственная на данный момент нормальная реализация вселенной Хайнлайна в видеоиграх.

Starship Troopers novel

The Marauder Suit is the basic Power Armor used by the Mobile Infantry. Each armored suit is customized to fit each individual. The armor is designed to give a trooper many times more strength, to let them jump over buildings at ease, and to deflect enemy fire.

Marauders are known as Soldier Suits (歩兵タイプ Hohei Taipu «Infantry Type»).

Different to the novel version, the Powered Suit in the anime uses a variety of machine guns as primary armaments, while the Y-Rack on the back of the armor is on the left shoulder instead. Also, the hatch opens from front instead of back.

The Soldier Suits can also mount various optional equipment, such as the missile launcher, the Y-Rack, and the flame thrower. In addition, the Soldier Suits have three extra variations:

• P.S.Variation, Type-1: Flame and LASER unit equipment
• P.S.Variation, Type-2: High gravity planet method «DEEP DIVER»
• P.S.Variation, Type-3: VOLCANO-RIFLE-SYSTEM loading type

Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy

There are two types of the Marauder Armor:

Terran Ascendancy version of Marauder suit reflects the need for head on brawls. The suit universally more heavy cladded than the recon variant. The 2nd and the 1st level suits come out with build in front facing multiple rocket launcher instead of recon drone of the recon variant with the option to wield heavy weapons. The suit can only be fixed with repair ability of engineer suit. As with all suit, when the suit’s armor is done, the suit will disintegrated and the wearer now armed and armored only by basic option of weapon and equipment.
