History
Veteran Sergeant Zhyr of the Red Scorpions Chapter.
Sergeant is an honoured rank amongst the Space Marines, a title and responsibility awarded in recognition of those Astartes who have proven their mettle in the heat of battle time-and-time-again.
These select individuals are singled out and awarded the title of Sergeant, along with the privilege of leading a squadron of their Battle-Brothers into the fires of war. Sergeants undergo additional special training in leadership and tactics.
They are the Astartes leaders primarily responsible for executing the Chapter’s missions and for training their squad members so that they are prepared to execute their operational functions at a moment’s notice.
In battle, a Sergeant has the option to use a variety of weapons, with most opting for a Bolt Pistol and Chainsword combination. The Sergeant may have fought enough battles to qualify as a Veteran.
Such Veterans are often promoted to special command duties or transferred to the vaunted ranks of their Chapter’s elite 1st Company.
Such is the experience wielded by the Sergeants of an Astartes squad that their seniority and authority is second only to that of their company’s Lieutenants and commanding Captain. It is not unusual for a senior Sergeant to be given command over several other squads at the battle’s onset, allowing the company Captain to focus his strategic and tactical acumen on a particular area of the conflict rather than dissipating it across the battlefront.
Should the Captain be slain or otherwise eliminated, command of the strike force automatically and seamlessly passes to the most senior Sergeant unless a Lieutenant is present.
Only a foolish enemy would think this to their advantage however — any shortfall in experience a Sergeant has in comparison to his fallen Captain is more than made up for by the newfound determination he possesses to avenge his fallen commander.
The Golden Legion
10,000 years ago the Custodians were created by the Emperor as his companions and sworn bodyguards. While they were created to defend the Throne World, the Adeptus Custodes have recognised that the most effective way to safeguard Terra is to take a proactive hand in the ongoing battle against Mankind’s innumerable foes. Guided by psychic divination and the intelligence gathered by shadowy agents, they strike down demagogues and warlords who might otherwise raise invasion forces against the heart of the Imperium.
The Adeptus Custodes never exceed ten thousand warriors at any given time. Fortunately, a single Custodian Guard is the equal of entire regiments of any other soldier, meaning that you’ll triumph despite being constantly outnumbered in battle. Equipped with the finest wargear that the Imperium can provide, your forces will be able to wade into the enemy. As bolts thunder from the guns of their guardian spears, swords and axes, their gilded storm shields deflect shots and blades as they fight and slay the enemies of the Emperor.
Primaris Captain
A Primaris Space Marine captain of the Ultramarines Chapter in Mark X Gravis Power Armour armed with a Power Sword and Boltstorm Gauntlet.
A Primaris Space Marine captain serves essentially the same function commanding a company of Primaris Astartes as does his Firstborn counterpart.
The only difference beyond his physical enhancements lies in his wargear, as it does for all Primaris Space Marines.
The Primaris captain is a stoic, indomitable commander. He is as much a leader as he is a fighter, possessing masteries in both ranged and close quarters combat.

Space Marine Sergeant Variants
- Assault Sergeant — Assault Marines who excel in the fury of close combat are organised into Assault Squads and equipped with Jump Packs that allow them to take the fight to the enemy in brutal close-quarters fighting. Armed with a mixture of pistols and melee weapons, usually Chainswords, they are terrifying foes in battle, dropping from above like flaming angels of death. Often they operate far ahead of the rest of the Space Marine force, always in constant danger of being outflanked, cut off or overwhelmed by superior numbers. The Assault Sergeant is a master of command-and-control, always aware not only of his current tactical situation, but also any imminent or potential developments. This ensures that he is able to properly coordinate his Assault Squad’s deployments and operational efficiency.
- Scout Squad Sergeant — Scout Marines are placed under the tutelage of a Scout Sergeant who will oversee their induction and training and also lead the Scouts into their first battles. Not yet ready to join a full company of their Chapter, the young Scouts live alongside their brothers in the 10th Company. They are trained in the arts of war and are often utilised to scout ahead of an advancing Space Marine force to gather intelligence and to execute surprise attacks behind enemy lines. Sergeants of the 10th Scout Company are often amongst the most experienced members of the Chapter, usually having passed through the ranks of the elite 1st Company and forgone promotion to a higher office.
- Veteran Sergeant — A Veteran Sergeant is a grizzled Veteran of countless campaigns and a Chapter hero who has committed exceptional acts of valour and courage over many solar decades or centuries of service. They often receive the Crux Terminatus, having proven their battlefield skills as respected and accomplished Veterans of their Chapter. Veteran Sergeants are usually trained in the use of Terminator Armour. Veteran Sergeants lead the squads of their Chapter’s elite 1st Company, and are sometimes borrowed by other company squads within the Chapter, so as to better benefit those Battle-Brothers under their command with their experience and their access to more advanced wargear.
- Terminator Sergeant — Having proven themselves in the crucible of battle, Terminator Sergeants are counted first amongst their brethren and are expected to conduct the most difficult of missions and to perform beyond even the lofty standards of the Adeptus Astartes. As some of the greatest heroes within their Chapter, these vaunted and indefatigable heroes lead Terminator assaults aboard Tyranid-infested Space Hulks, spearhead teleport assaults, and conduct combat actions in extremely hostile environments.

Chapter Variants
Those Space Marine Chapters regarded as Codex-compliant Chapters usually adhere strictly to the tenets set down by the Primarch Roboute Guilliman to the letter. There are, however, several noteworthy and substantial deviations from the Codex Astartes prescribed doctrine.
Most notable among these deviations are the use of certain honourific ranks and titles within the Chapter in place of the standard Space Marine Sergeant rank, which was also a common practise amongst the ancient Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras of the late 30th and early 31st Millennia.
The following is a sample of some of the various honourifics and titles utilised by the Space Marines:

Vanguard Space Marine Units
- Vanguard Infiltrators — Vanguard Infiltrators are battleline squad units responsible for disrupting enemy communications and sabotaging targets of opportunity. Their back-mounted Omni-Scramblers intercept signals across a broad spectrum, scrambling frequencies and shutting down enemy communications. When the time comes for the Infiltrators to fight directly, they emerge from their hiding places under cover of Smoke Grenades and cut down their foes with disciplined volleys from their marksman Bolt Carbines.
- Vanguard Suppressors — Vanguard Suppressors are fire support units that specialise in rapid responses to heavily armoured enemy threats, entering battle either by dropping directly into the action via Grav-Chutes or in long, bounding leaps with the built-in Jump Packs of their Mark X Omnis Power Armour. As soon as a target is sighted, the Suppressors engage their shock-absorbing servo plates and let fly with their Accelerator Autocannons. The brutal ferocity of the foot-long, armour-piercing shells they unleash will blast apart anyone caught in their path and force even the most stoic enemies to seek shelter from the murderous firestorm.
- Vanguard Eliminators — Dedicated marksmen, these fire support warriors haunt the shadows of the battlefield, seeking out high-value targets and bringing them down with pinpoint volleys. The optical sights of their Bolt Sniper Rifles can be tailored for any situation, from thermoscopic vision to precision auspex scans that can penetrate several metres through solid matter. Each member of a Vanguard Eliminator Squad carries spare magazines filled with special issue ammunition for every tactical eventuality and variety of target.
- Vanguard Helix Adept — A Helix Adept is a medicae specialist who accompanies squads of Vanguard Marines. Due to the sheer length of time Vanguard Space Marines typically spend behind enemy lines, it was found effective for them to utilize a specialised corps of medical adepts permanently assigned to their formations. Known as Helix Adepts, these warriors are trained by the Chapter’s Apothecarion but are not fully-fledged Primaris Apothecaries.
- Vanguard Lieutenant — Primaris Lieutenants of the Vanguard formations provide support and tactical flexibility for their Captain. Often, when a strike team is engaged in a complex, multi-faceted operation, a Lieutenant will be assigned to oversee one or more critical aspects. In addition to their leadership qualities, Lieutenants are skilled bladesmen and dead-eye shots with their Occulus Bolt Carbines.
- Vanguard Captain — Some Primaris Space Marine Captains, including the 10th Company officer who serves as both the Master of Recruits and the Master of Reconnaissance in Codex Astartes-compliant Chapters, wear Mark X Phobos Armour and use Vanguard weapons such as the Instigator Bolt Carbine.
- Vanguard Librarian — Librarians chosen for Vanguard service have mastered unique battle-disciplines that focus on obscuring the passage of their comrades and wrong-footing the opponent with illusions and hallucinations. Shaping psychic energy about themselves like a cloak of shadow, these psykers guide their Battle-Brothers through enemy territory to their destination without raising so much as a flicker of suspicion from watchful foes. They are cowled in hooded Cameleoline Cloaks to keep their identity — and the formidable psychic potential at their disposal — concealed from prying eyes.
- Impulsor — The Impulsor is an anti-gravitic armoured personnel carrier often used by Vanguard Space Marine units.
- Invictor Tactical Warsuit — The Invictor is a lightly armoured combat walker often found fighting alongside Vanguard Space Marines on reconnaissance missions. It is designed with sound-dampening materials, enabling the warsuit to move at great speed with minimal noise output in support of the pilot’s Vanguard brethren.

Gameplay
Space Marine does not feature a cover system, like that used in the Gears of War franchise. As a Space Marine, the player is given enhanced regenerative abilities and an Iron Halo containing a regenerative protective Conversion Field emitter. When the player’s health gets low, performing special kill moves called executions can allow Titus to get a portion of his health back. Titus is accompanied by Sergeant Sidonus and Battle-Brother Leandros, both members of his company’s command squad, for most of the game’s missions, though in some instances Titus will have to go on solo missions. The game features a fury system that, when filled up, allows the player to either slow down time to enhance aiming or perform devastating melee attacks.
Titus’ starting weapons include a Combat Knife (Power Sword if the game was preordered through THQ), and a Bolt Pistol, though the player can acquire other weapons ranging from Plasma Guns and Lascannons to the mighty Thunder Hammer. The game includes a new weapon not featured in the actual table-top game known as the Vengeance Launcher, which can shoot mines that stick to enemies.
The main antagonists the player must fight in the game are the Orks and the Forces of Chaos. The Orks are a hulking, green-skinned alien race whose sheer numbers and savage ferocity make them a devastating opponent. However, the Forces of Chaos present a far more serious threat to the Imperium of Man, as they can literally extinguish the life of whole star systems by summoning limitless amounts of daemonic horrors that flourish in the parallel universe known as the Warp. Warp portals conjured by the Traitor Legions allow the daemons to cross over into realspace.
The Eye of Terror
Within the confines of the hellish zone of the Galaxy known as the Eye of Terror, the banished Chaos Space Marines, along with their exiled allies and slaves, have created their own Imperium of Chaos. In the most Chaos-saturated region of the galaxy, few in the ten thousand years of their exile have escaped mutation in some form.
Within the Eye, the legions fight among themselves for gene-seed, resources, slaves, or for the greater glory of the Chaos Gods. The legions however are far more driven by their hatred of the Imperium than by internecine rivalry. From the Eye, the forces of Chaos Marines emerge to exact their vengeance upon the Imperium, continuing the Long War they begun ten thousand years ago.
Chaos incursions range from the small scale but brutal raids which can occur anywhere in the galaxy, to the apocalyptic Black Crusades led by the Warmaster of Chaos, Abaddon the Despoiler, when the forces of Chaos in all its forms unite to batter the fortress worlds close to the Eye.

Recruitment and Training
Main article: Creation of a Space Marine
Recruits are chosen from the best warriors among humanity. Naturally, this makes Feral Worlds prized recruitment grounds, as such harsh and primal conditions produce the best warriors. However, Hive Worlds are considered the ideal source of potential recruits, the populace of the lower levels composed of some of the most murderous scum in the human Imperium. Whole gangs of hive scum are sometimes hunted down and captured for recruitment. Among the most valued traits in a recruit are aggression and psychotic-level killer instinct. Much more rarely, certain Civilised Worlds are also recruited from.
The potential recruit is first subjected to testing, including tissue compatibility tests and psychological screening. Relatively few get past this initial selection process. Those that do pass are termed «neophytes», and the process continues with the surgery, indoctrination, conditioning, and training that will make them Marines.
The surgical process takes a great deal of time. The recruit receives implants, along with chemical- and hypnotherapy, and training necessary for allowing the functioning and development of the implanted organs. The implants transform their bodies and minds and give them inhuman abilities — making them capable of spitting acidic venom, absorbing the memories of the dead by eating their flesh, darkening their skin to protect it from radiation, and operating for long periods without sleep by switching off parts of their brains at a time. After this implantation process and the associated training, the recruit becomes an «initiate».
Intense indoctrination and conditioning strengthens the recruit’s resolve and increases mental capabilities, honing them into dedicated and merciless warriors. After more general training, they join the Chapter as full «brothers».
The Threat Within
Genestealers are the pioneers of Tyranid invasions, infecting human cultures and, over generations, turning them into mutant insurrectionists known as the Genestealer Cults. Blessed with alien cunning and strange “gifts”, these worshippers of the Tyranids bring entire worlds down from within, turning the implements they once used to build the Imperium to its ultimate ruin in carefully planned insurrections that see even the military might of the Astra Militarum humbled.
Genestealer Cult forces let you take command of an insurrection, combining a scrappy, rugged array of civilian vehicles and weapons with nifty alien tricks. Capable of pouncing on enemies from anywhere in hit-and-run attacks, Genestealer Cult armies boast versatile infantry and terrifying close-combat brutes. Rewarding to careful planners, Genestealer Cults allow you to punch way above your weight through sheer cunning, while for painters and collectors, the army offers a glimpse at the “ordinary” civilians of the 41st Millennium – give or take a few arms…
Story
The Forge World Graia has been conquered by an Ork Waaagh led by Warboss Grimskull. Sent to liberate the planet is the Ultramarines 2nd Company. Players assume the role as Captain Titus, commander of the 2nd Company. Titus, alongside two other Marines, Sergeant Sidonus and Leandros, link up with the 203rd Cadian Regiment and locates Inquisitor Drogan. Drogan, alongside the Marines enters the Manufactorum’s power reactor searching for a device capable of opening a psychic scourge that apparently could kill the Orks. After retrieving the device, the Marines and Drogan later successfully activated the device on the Spire, an orbital elevator.
Instead of killing the Orks, it opens a warp gate which allows Chaos forces to attack Graia. It is implied that Drogan was killed after sending his distress message; Drogan’s corpse is possessed by a daemon that serves the Chaos Lord Nemeroth. As Nemeroth’s forces enter the planet, Titus plans to destroy the gates by using a Warlord Battle Titan to destroy the Spire. The Titan destroys the Spire; both Grimskull and Sidonus is killed in the process and the device is stolen. Titus, aided by the Blood Ravens leads an attack against Nemeroth’s forces to reach the remnants of the Spire and stop Nemeroth from ascending to daemonhood. Titus defeats Nemeroth and destroys the device.
Graia is liberated, and the game ends with Titus arrested by Inquisitor Thrax on fear that he maybe corrupted by Chaos.
In terms of the larger Warhammer 40,000 universe it has been stated on the game’s official website’s forum that, «The game takes place on a parallel timeline within the fluff, but the characters are not the same.» However, the validity of that statement has been questioned.
