Trivia

Art style of Plants vs. Zombies Adventures

  • It appears that the art style for this game was originally going to be the one in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, as shown on a beta gameplay photo shown on the right, but ultimately took on a more cartoonish art style resembling the one in Plants vs. Zombies 2.
  • The icon of the 1.0.11 update marked the first time where a plant (Green Shadow) was featured on the game’s icon instead of a zombie (Super Brainz).
  • The sound effect for gems being added is the same as some sound effects from the Bejeweled series, another game from PopCap.
  • As noted by the official website and game description game wise, this is the first mobile game where you can play as both the plants and the zombies.
  • Whenever a legendary card is played, the opposing hero will have a shocked or surprised expression different from their hurt or low health expression.
  • All of the new playable characters in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 appear in this game as heroes, with the exception of Kernel Corn and Captain Deadbeard, who appear as a legendary fighter and token fighter respectively.
  • If your Hero obtains one of his/her superpowers at the beginning, the Super-Blocks later won’t give him/her that superpower again. This means that each superpower can only be used once per game without Thinking Cap, Quazar Wizard, or Bird of Paradise. Interestingly, there are three Super-Blocks available, and one superpower is awarded at the beginning, it means that you can get all four superpowers in a game via a different way.
  • When your Hero is low on health (5 or less health), the current theme changes to a suspenseful, drastic one, still keeping the same melody.
    • Similarly, when the battle progresses, as well as when one hero takes some damage, the music will slightly change, usually becoming more suspenseful as the match goes on.
    • If the player has 5 more health than your opponent, then the music will be high pitched. It will be pitched even more higher if the player has 10 more health than your opponent. It will be more dramatic if the player has 10 less health than your opponent.
  • When it comes to the cards, most of the plants will be facing right, and all of the zombies will be facing left. This makes sense as plants would look right to shoot at zombies coming in from the right in many of their games.
  • In this game, the zombies don’t target brains. Instead, it is used as currency to play zombie cards and tricks, similarly to how brains are used as the zombies’ currency in Versus Mode in Plants vs. Zombies.
  • A few classes and a hero have a code name different from their original name:
    • Crazy is mentioned as Madcap.
    • Mega-Grow is mentioned as MegaGro.
    • The Smash is mentioned as Gargantuar.
  • If you scroll up in the Collections menu, there is a Wall-Nut hanging upside-down.

Other beta screens

A picture showing some concept art for the game. Note a yellow Marigold, a Peashooter with back leaves of a Repeater, and a Sunflower with a slightly different smile.

An early loading screen, presumably a placeholder.

Another early loading screen, also probably a placeholder.

An early version of the main menu. There are differences here, such as Zen Garden having its own button, a mode called «Challenges» and a vase tipped over in the background. The grave and buttons also have a different color. Dated August 21, 2008.

Another early version of the main menu. Dated October 8, 2008.

An early screenshot of Level 1-2. Notice the different plant selects, money counter, the different «Menu» button, and the Lawn Mowers.

Gameplay of the game (Flag Zombie’s flag is placed differently and Wall-nut was possibly going to be unlocked before Cherry Bomb), as well as the different designs for the level progress bar and shovel button. This level also has 3 flags.

An early screenshot of the beginning of Level 1-5.

Another early gameplay screenshot. Note the larger sized Potato Mine.

An early screenshot of the Roof. There are many differences here, such as Sunflower costing 100, Ice-shroom costing 100, Blover costing 150, Melon-pult being crudely drawn and costing 250 and Potato Mine costing 50. There are also early lawnmowers. Note that the seed packets say «Not Brains» instead of «Bloom & Doom Seed Co.» Dated March 20, 2008.

An early version of the Dr. Zomboss fight. The roof appears to have had its hue changed, the conveyor belt looks different and the level progress bar has a different font. Dated June 28, 2008.

An early screenshot of Slot Machine (ripped from SlotMachine.fla, dated August 12, 2008).

An early version of a Night level. Note the Hypno-shroom’s 100 sun cost and the early UI elements.

Trivia

In the game files, the «Mini-games», «Puzzles» and «Survival» buttons are named «Survival», «Challenges» and «Vasebreak».

Development

On July 16, 2019, Popcap stated that a new Plants vs. Zombies game, Plants vs. Zombies 3, was in development on their forum. The game was in Pre-Alpha and was meant as a way for players to test the game and give feedback for improvements to the game. Many of the requests were listened to, and they helped make the game better, until the Pre-Alpha was closed on February 10th, when the developers stated they were going through a new phase in development.

Later, on February 25th, 2020, Popcap revealed the game to a few select countries for a soft-launch phase. No official release date is clear as of this time.

On September 7th, 2021, Popcap soft-launched a new version of the game with everything reworked.

  • Sunflower
  • Wall-Nut

We need more gems and sprouts.
This section is currently under construction. You can help expand it; it’s your choice.

Most of the text is stored in main.pak/properties/LawnStrings.txt.

TEMP - Dave put more vases on your lawn!
The shovel needs time to refresh before digging again

In the final game, the shovel can always be used instantly, probably due to it being to difficult to deal with.

More vases incoming!
{STREAK} of 3 waves cleared

These lines were probably used in Level 4-5 (Vasebreaker) before Crazy Dave’s proper dialog was implemented.

Do not be alarmed
Plants are not real

This text was probably used in I, Zombie puzzles before Crazy Dave’s proper introductions were implemented.

Survival mode unlocked!
Play it from the main menu!

This suggests that Survival mode was once a from a present item. It’s not unlocked from a present item anymore, so this text goes unused.

You have defeated the Boss Zombie!

Congratulations! You have most triumphantly fended off the zombie attack! Your lawn is safe... for now!

This message was used in the pre-GOTY version, but became unused in the GOTY version; when you beat the final boss, the «achievements unlocked» screen will appear, but this message is not displayed.

Warning

You found a Mysterious Vase!
Now you can play
Vasebreaker Mode!

In the final game, Vasebreaker and I, Zombie are introduced at the same time.

More seeds?
Would you like to be able to plant more kinds of seeds?

These lines were probably used when the player was offered to increase the number of their seed slots before Crazy Dave’s dialog was introduced.

WARNING!

Another warning, but this time a Zombatar warning.

Do you wish to replay level 3-4?

Shown when the demo is completed, as it ends on 3-4.

Trivia

  • Dog Walking Zombie, Dog Zombie, and Propeller Zombie were going to appear in the game but were taken out and there are no sprites for them but only artwork.
  • The shovel had to be recharged before it could be used again.
  • Survival Mode was going to be available from a present item but now it is unlocked after beating Adventure Mode for the first time.
  • There was supposed to be a Mysterious Vase that unlocks Vasebreaker mode, but in the final game, both Vasebreaker and I, Zombie are unlocked at the same time.

Trivia

  • Many of Peashooter’s textures, such as his bottom leaves and its head, are used in images of other plants.
  • He originally had leaves for his eyebrows, similar to Repeater. However, it was later changed to simply have no visible eyebrows at all.
  • When on the Zombatar tab of the Plants vs. Zombies Website, a Peashooter with blue hair can be seen at the corner of the screen.
  • Out of every plant, he appears in the most mini-games.
  • He, Imitater, Explode-o-nut, Giant Wall-nut, Giant Sunflower and Giant Marigold are the only non-upgrade plants that are not obtained by completing a level.
  • He, Puff-shroom, Wall-nut and Jalapeno are the only plants referenced to in another plant’s Suburban Almanac description. Peashooter and Jalapeno are referenced in the Imitater’s entry.
  • Sometimes in Heat Wave, Peashooter will transfer directly from orange to brown. It is unknown whether this is a glitch or not.
  • In the Android and iOS versions of Plants vs. Zombies, a Peashooter’s leaf is much thicker.
  • He is nicknamed «小豆» (lit. «little bean») in Plants vs. Zombies: Journey to the West.

Strategies

Peashooter is the first source of firepower in the player’s arsenal until another offensive plant is unlocked, namely Snow Pea. As a general rule, Peashooter will be outclassed by almost all plants unlocked later on, as it takes a while to defeat even the most basic Zombie and lacks a proper mechanic to aid himself or support other plants. Regardless, Peashooter is useful as an early offense plant to buy time for planting other offensive plants, unless the player wants to use Potato Mine or other instants instead. With its low price and good rate of fire, it can hold off the old zombies for long enough, allowing the player to plant a better offensive plant.

Peashooters should be planted on the lane of an oncoming zombie, where he will fire at the zombie until either himself or its target has been killed. Torchwood can also be used to give Peashooter’s projectile splash damage in Plants vs. Zombies, as well as double their damage in both games, therefore turning him into a somewhat powerful area damage plant.

Peashooting plants of any type are not advised in the Roof levels, as they cannot shoot over the sloped section of the roof unless they are on the rightmost sloped column. This holds true if the player is aiming for the Grounded achievement, but Fume-shrooms with Coffee Bean usually provide superior crowd control capability.

Heat Wave mini-game

Peashooters are the only offensive plants available in the mini-game Heat Wave, where tough enemies that would normally absorb many peas appear frequently. The Peashooters have a special ability, however — immediately after shouting (or making noise) into the microphone of the Nintendo DS, some of the Peashooters on the screen will gain an orange-yellowish tint and begin shooting a constant stream of peas at the same rate as a Repeater. The supercharged Peashooters will allow the player to make short work of tough zombies like the Gargantuar that Peashooter would normally be unable to deal with.

However, the noises on the microphone should be maintained, as over time, without a signal, the Peashooters will eventually tire out and turn a tint of brown, and soon enough black. A constant source of loud noises, such as a speaker or fan, is advised to keep the Peashooters running.

Trivia

  • The game was only available in China, similar to the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 and Plants vs. Zombies for mobile.
  • Plants and zombies show detailed health bar on their head when they get damaged. Armored zombies like Bucketheads show separate blue bar that shows the armor’s health. Zombies and defensive plants still visibly degrade when damaged enough. Boss zombies have a large health bar at the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Ancient Egypt is extremely different from its counterpart version in PvZ2

This area’s normal level music is completely different from Plants vs. Zombies 2, but Ultimate Battle and Brainiac Maniac music are identical to their Plants vs. Zombies 2 counterpart. This is also the only area to have Ultimate Battle and Brainiac Maniac music.

, both in appearance, and music.

  • Some music from the first game appears again here, for example, during the Boxing Minigame you can hear the Loon Boon theme in-game.
  • The second beta added a PvP mode, Racing Minigame, and Soccer Minigame.
  • The seed packets are blue and they are at the top of the screen, similar to the first game

More recent versions of the game seem to have more of a variety of colors, like orange, purple, green, and white. These colors represent the number of upgrades the seed packet has from the Greenhouse.

    .

  • There is a research area and PvP mode, similar to Chinese PvZ2 and Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars, but unlike the other Plants vs. Zombies games.
  • Players no longer need to click to collect sun, they can just hover the mouse over them to collect it.
  • The main game interface is a little similar to Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, as the player can unlock places like Institutes (pubs, supermarkets, etc.). There is also a garden in where they can plant plants.
  • The player can now can choose one plant from other players before a level starts.
  • The player can upgrade plants now. (e.g. plant Peashooter on Peashooter to create a Repeater).
  • In PvP and garden missions, the player can select a group of either plants or zombies for an RPG turn-based battle.
  • Pirate Seas and Far Future are currently the only worlds that have the Gargantuar and Imp variant.
  • Stinky the Snail makes a cameo in this game from Insaniquarium and the original Plants vs. Zombies, appearing whenever the game is loading.
  • For some odd reason, there were soundbytes from Angry Birds in the game. This could have possibly been a glitch or a placeholder.
  • The game allows the player to hold up to four Plant Foods at a time. Unlike Plants vs. Zombies 2, the game still allows the player to collect a Plant Food after this limit is reached, but doing so will waste the collected Plant Food.
  • As in an update, the game now plays the Modern Day theme, Neon Mixtape Tour Ballad jam or Zen Garden theme in the town area.
  • Some time after the game closed, a group of Chinese players managed to get their hands on the game’s source code and posted it on Pan.Baidu.com. On February 26th, 2021, a user on this very wiki, Map220v, managed to find the download link on Baidu and has since been working on fixing the game. The game is still currently in a broken state but it’s fixed enough to be partially playable. It is unofficial.

Development

In August 2012, PopCap announced that they were working on a sequel to their previous game, Plants vs. Zombies, and that it would include «new features, settings, and situations». In a later announcement, the company confirmed that the new game would be released on July 18, 2013.

On June 26, 2013, PopCap announced on their Twitter page that the game would release later than previously announced. On July 9, the game was released in Australia and New Zealand on the iOS App Store and came out worldwide on August 15, 2013. The Android version was released worldwide on October 23, 2013.

Release

The game was first expected to launch on iOS on July 18, 2013. On June 26, it was announced that the game was delayed until later in the summer on the game’s official Twitter account. The game soft launched in Australian and New Zealand App Store’s on July 9, to test server capacity. It launched worldwide on iOS on August 15 and in five days topped the free app charts in 137 countries.

On September 12, PopCap Games soft launched the game for Android in China in Baidu AppSearch and announced that it would be coming to Google Play worldwide later in the year. On October 2, the game soft launched on the Australian and New Zealand Google Play stores.

Spawnable zombies

There are 17 Spawnable Zombies that can be used. To summon a zombie, look for grave dirt piles. The spawnable zombies are used as assistance to fight against the plants in Gardens & Graveyards. Each are considered consumables that once used can not be picked back up. Spawnable Zombies can only be obtained by purchasing sticker packs with in-game coins.

Gameplay

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a free-to-play game, unlike its predecessor, supporting in-app purchasing of coins in order to utilize certain power up abilities: Plant Food, a new power-up, allows plants to power up for varying amounts of time. Each plant has its own ability when given Plant Food. Players can complete the whole game without purchasing these abilities, some of which can be earned throughout the game instead of being purchased. Additionally, users can level up their plants using Seed Packets (found in-game or bought with real money) to allow them to permanently enhance their abilities.

Players can start an optional tutorial which takes place in front of the player’s house. Afterward, the player travels to Ancient Egypt and can win in-game World Keys by completing Day 6 to unlock a series of additional period settings («worlds»); this required a certain number of stars in earlier updates. As players go through levels, they unlock new plants each with advantages and unique boosts.
