Which package is right for me?

Our dedicated server package comes in two forms both with different benefits. One is distributed to you through your Steam client (the same application you use to launch games in Steam) as a tool, and the other is distributed through Steam’s console client (SteamCMD ) as a standalone application.

Here are the basic differences and benefits of them both:

Maps

They Hunger: Escape

  • Added a new room with a shotgun and a zombie cop ambush spawn to the alley next to the ambulance.
  • Added fold-able wooden barricades next to the burning tunnel debris, visible only when the tunnel is blocked. (Should make it more obvious that this is the only route through to the other side.)
  • Added fold-able wooden barricades to downtown sewer entrance if toolbox spawns there.
  • Added infinite spanner spawn to sewer next to where the toolbox sometimes spawns.
  • Added missing civilian models to the permitted player model list.
  • Added sewer labels to all three sewer tunnels surrounding the truck to prevent players getting lost so easily.
  • Added sewer steam to make the entrances more noticeable.
  • Added skill configuration, with level 1 being normal difficulty, and level 2 being hardcore:
    • Barney now does 2 points less damage with his pistol in both modes.
    • Bullsquid has less health and does 5 points less spit damage in normal mode.
    • Otis cops (sheriff included) now do 25 damage instead of 37 in both modes.
    • Snarks deal 5 damage per bite instead of 10 in normal mode.
    • Zombies do 5 less damage per swing and 10 less damage per double-swing in normal mode.
  • Added some lights to the map start room.
  • All downtown zombie spawns now use a «trigger_playercheck» master so that they aren’t turned on when no one is there.
  • Colt 1911 handgun now respawns infinitely in the police station / ambulance / radio station.
  • Deleted female zombie that kept getting stuck in church upper hallway.
  • Deleted ‘random civilian’ spawnpoint in the train station that wasn’t near any weapons.
  • Disabled a couple of debug messages in the scripts.
  • Extra minute is added to the time limit if the game is started with 4 or less players.
  • Fixed crappy brushwork with holes in it on the roof of the train station and the hallway connected to the church.
  • Fixed police tunnel roof being «func_detail», which made it so that everything in the tunnel rendered whenever you looked over at it from above.
  • Fixed some pretty bad cylinder face carving issues.
  • func_trackvehicle: Updated the script to match the recent API change.
  • Hardcore mode is now forced for 16+ players, rather than 10+.
  • In the «jail» lose cutscene, two players will now spawn in either cell and the rest will fall through the collapsing ceiling (only if there are any more than two living players at the end of the round, which is somewhat rare).
  • Made the unbreakable train depot door metal instead of wood so that dumb people don’t pound on it for days trying to break through.
  • Sewer treatment engineer 3 now spawns with a spanner.
  • Sheriff now spawns in both normal and hardcore modes, rather than just hardcore. Sheriff has less health in normal mode.
  • Umbrella in pawn shop now respawns infinitely.
  • Window glow in the gas station garage is slightly brighter, so that players can actually see the toolbox if it spawns there.

Setting up Sven Co-op

Here is how to install Sven Co-op:

  1. Install Steam and register an account if you haven’t already.
  2. Launch Steam and log in.
  3. Visit the Sven Co-op store page so you can activate Sven Co-op on your Steam account.
  4. In the main Steam screen click Library.
  5. Scroll down the list of available games until you see Sven Co-op.
  6. Double-click the package to install it.
  7. Follow the on-screen installation.

Once completed Sven Co-op will appear in your Steam library. Simply double-click it to start.

Before playing you should set your game options. To do simply select Options from the title screen, then go through the tabs until you’re happy. Be sure to check out what the controls are.

Once you’re ready click Find servers to find a game server to play on.

Interaction

In order to help your team complete missions effectively with allied characters, there are a set of commands you can use (and bind to a key) to interact with the allied characters around.

All allied characters will follow the players in the same way scientists or Barney does in regular Half-Life. Simply use them once to make them follow you, then use them again to make them stay where they are.

All allies that are following you can now be given simple commands. You can set keys to these commands in the control options.

There are some combinations you can set on these keys for better interaction, for example:

  • bind X «grenade; say_team Look out!»
  • bind Z «medic; npc_return; say_team Medic please.»
  • Friendly opposing force grunts are dressed in jungle camouflage, and hostile opposing force grunts are dressed in the standard white urban camouflage. While this is different from opposing force, this is necessary to keep the same style as the standard grunts in Sven Co-op. Just remember, green is good, white is bad.
  • Players caught by Barnacles will not be able to call for aid. Other players will only hear a struggle.

Human

Often skilled and as fast as players, human foes can use a wide range of weapons and intelligence to combat enemies. However they are highly vulnerable to bullets, poison, and can be eaten by Barnacles and Gargantuas.

Barnabus

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: Low
  • Weapons: 9mm pistol
  • Special abilities: None
  • Role: Defense

Barnabus is Barney’s evil twin brother. He is also a security guard, but in a pretty bad temper and will fire at players on sight.

Otto

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: Low
  • Weapons: Desert eagle
  • Special abilities: None
  • Role: Defense

Just like Barney, Otis has an evil twin brother too. Even though they look similar, both have a weight problem and like donuts. This security guard won’t help you.

Grunt

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: Medium
  • Weapons: MP5; M16 with grenade launcher; Shotgun; SAW; RPG; Hand grenades; Kicking
  • Special abilities: Can call for a medic grunt for healing
  • Role: Attack

Grunts have various weapon load-outs and will work in squads effectively to take you down.

Medic grunt

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: Medium
  • Weapons: 9mm pistol; Desert eagle
  • Special abilities: Can call for a medic grunt for healing, can heal and revive other grunts
  • Role: Support

The role of the Medic is to keep the enemy squads alive. Make sure you take him down first before engaging other grunts.

Torch grunt (aka Engineer)

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: Medium
  • Weapons: Desert eagle
  • Special abilities: Can call for a medic grunt for healing, can open doors with a blowtorch
  • Role: Support

The Torch Grunt carries a canister of pressurized gas, which is highly flammable. Aim for the canister and it will explode, taking the Torch Grunt and nearby enemies down.

Heavy weapons grunt

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: High
  • Weapons: Microgun
  • Special abilities: Can call for a medic grunt for healing
  • Role: Attack
  • The microgun carried is heavy, which makes him move very slowly. It also takes a second for him to spin up his weapon, use this to your advantage.
  • The heavy weapons grunt will drop his microgun upon death, which can be picked up and used by players.
Female assassin

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: High
  • Weapons: 9mm pistol (silenced)
  • Special abilities: Very fast, high jumping, cloaking
  • Role: Assassination

The female assassin is fast and athletic, making her a deadly foe. She can leap high into the air and cloak herself making her semi-invisible.

Male assassin

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: High
  • Weapons: MP5; M16 with grenade launcher; Sniper rifle; Hand grenades; Martial arts
  • Special abilities: Fast, highly trained
  • Role: Assassination
  • Don’t let them get too close as their martial arts ability is as efficient as their weaponry.
  • Just like the grunts, the male assassins have various load-outs. However, they are stronger, faster, and highly trained.
Bodyguard

  • Class: Human military
  • Threat: Very high
  • Weapons: 9mm pistol; Desert eagle; MP5; Shotgun; Microgun; Dual uzi; Sniper rifle
  • Special abilities: Fast, highly trained
  • Role: Defense
  • The bodyguard can wield a wide selection of weapons, making him a dangerous foe.
  • Bodyguards are the most elite human enemy you will encounter. Team up with players to take them down.

The players

Your team mates in Sven Co-op (other players attempting the same mission) will commonly look similar to the figure on the right, though there are many character models to choose from. All players have exactly the same abilities as you, and can fight just as hard.

It is essential that you co-operate with your team mates, as most Sven Co-op levels are a lot harder than the original Half-Life missions with stronger enemies and more combat. You may also need to work with your team mates to solve puzzles or to activate certain buttons.

Communication with others helps ensure success, so before you play check your key setting for the Chat Message command (default Y) — better yet, if you have a microphone handy, use the control options menu to set a key for Use Voice Communication and hold the key in game to talk to team mates. Remember to use voice communication in respect of other players hearing!

  • You cannot hurt or kill your team mates. Consider any attempt to do so as a waste of ammunition.
  • Some maps require a player to be boosted up to a higher ledge. This is where one player will crouch down by the higher platform allowing another player to jump on top to reach the higher area. It helps if players are kind and offer to boost others when required.
  • To help with boosting, some maps enable a new feature called auto climbing. This is done by jumping against a wall of a higher area, and depending on the height of the area, you can boost yourself up on top of it.

Some players will have icons beside them on the score board. This denotes players who are donors or members of the Sven Co-op team as follows:

  • Donor ($5+) with electric crowbar extra.
  • Donor ($8+) with electric crowbar and gold Uzi extras.
  • Donor ($20+) with electric crowbar and gold Uzi extras.
  • Game contributor / internal tester.
  • Game artist (maps, models, sounds, etc)
  • Game developer / co-ordinator.

On the far right of the score board you may find players with the server administrator icon , which means this person helps run and maintain the game server you’re playing on. They are your first point of contact if you are having any trouble while playing on their game server. This icon may be tinted gold to signify that the person owns the game server.

Installing your map to play it

Your map at the very least will consist of a BSP file, but may also come with a range of configuration and resource files depending on the level of customisation you’ve taken with your map. Once your map is compiled and ready to be played for testing, you will need to copy various files to your game folder.

Do not copy any unofficial resources directly into the svencoop folder. To help keep your game files clean, use the svencoop_addons folder. The game engine is perfectly capable of loading maps and their contents from this location.

Disposable weapons

Hand grenade

  • Primary fire: Throw a grenade
  • Secondary fire: Throw a banana bomb

Simple hand grenades with a 4 second fuse. The fuse starts as soon as you press down on primary fire.

If you hold primary fire, the fuse will remain active in your hand. This is handy for throwing shorter fuse grenades at enemies that traditionally avoid them.

The banana bomb is 10 grenades in 1, thus you require 10 grenades to throw one. The fuse on banana bombs only start once they leave your hand.

Satchel charge

  • Primary fire: Throw a satchel / detonate planted satchels
  • Secondary fire: Throw additional satchel

The Satchel Charge can be used to ambush enemies or plan multiple explosions. Throw it on the ground, step back and detonate it with a remote control.

  • You can pick up your own satchels that you plant by using them.
  • You can kick anyone’s satchels around by walking into them and dragging them along the floor, or jumping to kick them up high.
Tripmine

  • Primary fire: Plant mine
  • Secondary fire: None

Tripmines can be planted on floors, walls or ceilings. Within a second of its placement it will activate itself and emit a beam. As as soon someone or something touches the beam, the tripmine will explode.

Shooting the mine once planted will also detonate the mine.

Snark

  • Primary fire: Throw snark
  • Secondary fire: None, or is it? 😉

The extremely nippy snark can be gathered from its nest and used as a weapon. Release a snark and it will pursue the first unfriendly tasty thing it can find.

Snarks thrown by players will never attack other players or allies.

Passwords

Setting Default value Description
rcon_password Empty Password used for accessing the server console remotely. Use a password strength meter to help you build a good password. Only your trusted server administrators should know this as it allows unlimited access to your game server. If you leave this blank, remote console access will not be available (don’t worry — it won’t allow everyone to use RCON without a password).
sv_password Empty Password used for players to join your server. Leave blank if your server is public.
sv_spectator_password Empty Password used for spectators to join your server. Leave it blank if your server is public. Currently obsolete in Sven Co-op.

Players

Core variables

sys_ticrate 100 The maximum number of frames/second your server will process.Frame rates too high will (over 200) also have a negative effect on physics and NPC movement, and will cause many brush entities to cause crush damage when nothing is blocking them.
sv_contact Empty The email address of the server manager, so players have someone to contact when there is a problem.
sv_downloadurl Empty The HTTP address where your server’s custom content can be found, so players can download it very fast. This is essential to get players onto your server while it’s running non-standard maps. HTTPS is currently unsupported, but will be available in a future release.

deathmatch 1 This is essential for the intended game play of Sven Co-op. Do not change this, and do not use the coop setting.
decalfrequency 30 The time (seconds) a player must wait before making their spray again. will remove this delay, but is not recommended.
hpk_maxsize 2 The size limit (megabytes) of the file that stores uploaded sprays. The oldest sprays are removed to make way for new sprays.
pausable Determines whether the game on your server can be paused by anyone. This is never recommended on public servers.
skill 3 The default skill level your server will use. Maps can override this in their configuration.

  • 0: Always let the map choose.
  • 1: Easy, enemies are easy to kill, players are hard to kill.
  • 2: Hard, enemies are hard to kill, players are easy to kill.
  • 3: Realistic, enemies are easy to kill, players are very easy to kill — enables realistic weapon damage.

Mappers are recommended not to use this setting, but still do.

Melee / tools

Crowbar

  • Primary fire: Beat
  • Secondary fire: Toggle electricity on/off (donors only)
  • Tertiary fire: Throw crowbar
  • Ammo: None

The half-life crowbar has been improved in Sven Co-op. Donors gain the special feature to add electric damage to their crowbar. The electric crowbar is powered through your HEV armor battery and will drain power from that source every time you successfully hit a player, ally, or enemy.

  • With the electricity on you also beat objects faster, but keep an eye on your HEV power.
  • The new tertiary fire, where you throw your crowbar hard, is bound to MOUSE3 (middle button) by default. The command for this is +alt1.
Combat knife

  • Primary fire: Slash
  • Secondary fire: Toggle electricity on/off (donors only)
  • Tertiary fire: Throw knife
  • Ammo: None

The combat knife featured in Opposing Force acts as a direct replacement for the crowbar, and is officially available to other maps. It functions exactly the same as the crowbar, but has a higher attack rate due to its lower weight.

  • With the electricity on you also beat objects faster, but keep an eye on your HEV power.
  • The new tertiary fire, where you throw your knife, is bound to MOUSE3 (middle button) by default. The command for this is +alt1
Pipe wrench

  • Primary fire: Club / repair
  • Secondary fire: Power swing
  • Ammo: None

The wrench is similar to the crowbar, but swings at a much slower rate. However, it does much more damage. Use the power swing to get especially heavy swings.

  • The longer you hold power swing before releasing, the more powerful the swing will be. There is a limit though.
  • The pipe wrench can now repair your turrets, both sentry and mounted. It can also revive them.
Medkit

  • Primary fire: Heal
  • Secondary fire: Revive
  • Ammo: Health points (self-generating)

The medkit is designed to help keep your team mates alive through the worst that can be thrown at them. Simply move close to a player that needs healing, and «fire» the medkit at them to instantly heal 10 health points. The medkit will be emptied quickly if lots of people need healing, but it will slowly recharge itself. You can also refill it quickly using wall-mounted health chargers once your own health is full.

To revive a dead player or friendly NPC, your medkit will need to have at least 50 health points stored. Get close to the other player or NPC and use the secondary fire to revive them.

  • You cannot heal yourself with the medkit. Instead you will need to use the medic command (press Z) to call for assistance. If you are dead, you can still use the medic command to notify other players that you are in need of revival.
  • You can only revive players and NPCs that haven’t been gibed (body ripped apart to pieces). Conversely, you cannot call to be revived once you have been gibed.
Barnacle grapple

  • Primary fire: Launch tongue
  • Secondary fire: Toggle between pull/rappel mode
  • Ammo: None

The Barnacle is used to help players reach areas that are too high to jump. It can only attach to players, certain monsters, and certain Xen surfaces (as shown on the right).

The way the Barnacle grapple works is defined by the map creator. On some maps, it will only attach to small monsters. On others, it will pull monsters to you instead of the other way around.

Unique to the Sven Co-op version of the Barnacle grapple, players can either be pulled by the grapple, or be dropped slowly (rappel), depending on what mode is chosen.

Finally, the Barnacle grapple can also be used to eat monsters similar to a regular Barnacle. The difference is the grapple is much smaller, thus takes much longer to kill an enemy. This bite is only effective against very small monsters, such as headcrabs.

  • You can grapple onto your fellow players allowing you to, for example, boost another player onto a ledge then grapple up to the ledge yourself. Alternately, if you were on a ledge above a deep cavern, you could grapple onto a player and rappel to the bottom. You could even use the barnacle to hold onto another player as he swings through a tricky grapple course.
  • You can swap between Rappel and Pull modes while the barnacle is attached to a surface, this allows you to bungee.

Heavy duty weapons

M40a1 sniper rifle

  • Primary fire: Single shot
  • Secondary fire: Toggle zoom scope on/off
  • Ammo: 7.62×51mm NATO

A powerful manual weapon with a slow rate of fire, the M40a1 is a standard sniper rifle.

In Sven Co-op the M40a1 does more damage than in Opposing Force, but is very inaccurate when not zoomed in.

M249 SAW

  • Primary fire: Automatic fire
  • Secondary fire: None
  • Ammo: 5.56×45mm NATO

The M249 SAW (squad automatic weapon) is a powerful yet portable machine gun with a high firing rate and damage. It can be used to provide supporting fire for team mates. It has a belt of 200 5.56 mm rounds, but suffers high reload time.

XM214 microgun

  • Primary fire: Spin with automatic fire
  • Secondary fire: Spin barrels
  • Ammo: 5.56×45mm NATO

The most powerful weapon available to players, the microgun is capable of easily cutting through hordes of monsters with a fast stream of rounds. The microgun can be spun-up/kept spinning by holding using the secondary fire button. Pressing the fire button in this mode will make the microgun fire straight away without the spin-up delay.

While holding the microgun players are a lot slower, unable to jump, and unable to change weapons. You must drop the microgun to be able to select another weapon (set a key to drop weapon in the control options, or bind any key to drop — usually G).

The microgun offers a continuous belt of 5.56 mm rounds without the need to reload.

  • Players must pick up a microgun by using one on the ground rather than simply walking over one.
  • The microgun cannot be fired while the player is on a ladder.
  • When a heavy weapons grunt is killed, his microgun is dropped and is available for a player to pick up.
  • Accuracy is dramatically improved by crouching while firing.
  • While using the microgun a lone player is extremely vulnerable. The microgun must be used as a support weapon, with other players defending the microgunner and/or distracting enemies until the microgun can be spun up.
